A Different Way of Moving

A Pause Before We Move Forward

I often bring up this idea of honoring the transitions during my work, in my classes and workshops. I do so as a reminder to others and myself of the importance of realizing where we are and what it took for us to bring ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually to any given space.

In my classes, the deep breaths we take before we start dancing and moving are one way to center ourselves. They are also a way to bring our experience to the body and away from the head, giving ourselves a moment to pause and arrive.

As we move into fall and a new season, I have been thinking about how there are other ways in which we go on autopilot. Our internal chatter can sometimes sound very similar to the one we had last year as the fall started. Our routines may change, but our automatic ways of thinking, doing and responding can stay the same.

This made me start questioning my own approach to routines and the beginning of new cycles. I wonder what it would feel like to adopt a different perspective and way of being in these new yet familiar routines.

What if I could focus more on the process and slow down to appreciate these transitions instead of anticipating what is in store for me? What if the focus could be on what fuels me and on my level of energy so I can be at my best for what is to come?

Sometimes, honoring a transition also means checking in with ourselves and recognizing when we are running on low. It means becoming more aware of our automatic habits and being intentional about how we want to move through what comes next.

As the seasons change and cycles close, we also change and develop new ways of being, coping and thinking. Sometimes honoring the transitions is allowing ourselves to integrate our learning and growth so we can fully step into what is in front of us.

I was reminded of this when I took a picture of a monarch butterfly before it was released to begin its migration. There was something about that moment that stayed with me. It made me think about how transitions can require both a pause and a willingness to move forward into something new.

As we enter this new season, I invite you to pause and reflect:

  • How are you navigating the current transitions in your life?

  • What new perspective are you adopting as you enter this new season?

  • What does your autopilot or default way of moving through changes look like?

  • And perhaps, what is your energy telling you about what you need as you move forward?
